On December 22nd, 1927 in the street Bartolomé Masso No. 133 in this city, the General Committee of The Extraodinary Assembly, the members of the Ajim Amevorajim Union and the Israeli Union Benei Hatikva, met with the aim of joining both institutions and creating a Community that will gather all the Hebrews in Camaguey. The Tifheret Israel was born. Roberto Levy was elected President and he received the transfer of the San Primo farm land from Rabbi Guershon Maya, representative of Shevet Ajim Association from Havana, in this land the Israeli Cemetery had been built in 1924 In 1923, The Shevet Ajim was constituted and was represented by Rafael Eli Levy. The Jewish Association, gathering all the Jews of Ciego de Avila (now a province), was represented by Rafael Behar. With all the conditions created the Camaguey Community began its development as an active, strong and prosperous Community where most of the families had commerces of different types and achieved economic stability. They also shared the social life in Camaguey without disregarding their traditions and ways of life which they believed in and practice. The following years marked the growth of the Community. In 1929 the Union of Jewish wome was created, presided by Berta Ojalvo and situated at Rotario No. 14. In 1939 the Youth Community of Coamaguey was created, the leader was Jacobo Pérez Mechulam and in 1942 the Israeli Center of Camaguey was founded and presided by Luis Sinalovsky. |
