Brief history
Our Community was born in 1922 when some Turkish
Jewss immigrated to the region and they decided to create a framework
for the development of The Jewish life in this area. Among them,
there was David Levis, who was the founder of the synagogue in Manzanillo.
There was a two- story building. The Rabbi lived in the first floor
and the Temple was in the second floor.
After the 60´s, due to the immigration of
most of the members of the Community, the synagogue was abandoned
and little by little it was destroyed. The remaining people kept
contacts with an office in Prado 260, in Old Havana, which informed
us about the celebrations during the year. The products for Pesaj
were distributed through Dr. Mechulam. After that, all the contacts
were lost, until 1997 with the aid of Roberto Senderowitcsh and
the Hebrew Community of Santiago de Cuba. And after that, with Diego
Memdelbaum with whom we started visiting the synagogue in Santiago
de Cuba during Shabat and some other festivities. We often visited
The Patronage and we participated in the Majanot.
Then, we continued with Ivan and Cynthia, they helped
us to develop our first Kabalat Shabat and we participated in the
welcoming of groups in Santiago de Cuba. Nowadays we celebrate some
festivities and at least one Shabat a month with all the Community.
